The in-game menu is found in Ava’s scroll. Like most phone or computer apps, this menu holds a lot of important information for users, and lets them change settings. On a computer, in order to access the scroll while playing, press tab at any time outside of a dialogue segment. You can also click on the icon of the scroll in the upper right hand corner.
In the scroll, you can:
-
Check Ava’s quest log, which provides a checklist of what story tasks a player has accomplished, and what remains to be completed. If a player is stuck on what to do next, they can check this log. Click on a sub-quest on the left to see all the steps it contains.
The quest log is split into the sub-quests on the left, and steps on the right. The player will get a pop up message on their screen every time they progress to the next stage of the sub-quest.
-
View Ava’s map, which shows a map of the current level Ava is on.
-
The player’s location will be marked by an icon of Ava’s head
-
Quest objectives are marked in red
-
Unexplored areas will be covered in clouds, which will lift as the player explores them.
A map of the underbelly area that shows Ava’s position, a quiet space position, and where her objective is. Clouds cover the section she hasn’t explored yet. On a computer, move the window with the arrow keys
-
-
Find the items tab which shows what items Ava has collected so far, and keeps tally of how many coins she has collected.
💡 In the ‘Trust’ module, Ava can use her coins to add upgrades to her grappling hook. One increases the distance the hook can shoot, and one increases the number of times the hook can shoot in the air before needing to reload.
-
Find the options tab, which has important settings that the player or professional can change, which impact the game experience:
-
Sound effect volume (for example: the sound of Ava’s footsteps, grappling hook, scroll opening and closing sounds)
-
Background music volume
-
Game difficulty - Note that this does not impact the difficulty of the story or SEL components, only the difficulty of the gameplay. This ensures that the game remains engaging for a wide range of player skill levels.
- Easy mode - player does not need to use the grappling hook, and only needs to jump from platform to platform. Good for beginning players who are not familiar with the game
- Medium mode - player will need to use grappling hook at times, but still with some platforming supports
- Hard mode - more complex platforming that’s good for more experienced gamers that enjoy playing games like Ava already

Access to the counselor menu
-
The counselor menu allows professionals, or the player themselves, to skip past overly challenging platforming sections. To do this, just click the ‘skip to next checkpoint’ button, and Ava will be moved past the obstacle. Also, players/professionals can choose to skip to the next game quest entirely by clicking a desired quest button shown on the menu. Note that this will skip a large chunk of the story if used.
You can see this article for more information on skipping a quest.
